Hiroshige Utagawa, a Japanese ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period, painted a set of “One Hundred Famous Scenes of Edo” between 1856 and 1858. This set of classic prints was based on the famous sights of Edo (today’s Tokyo). In addition to his sophisticated platemaking and color registration techniques, Utagawa Hiroshige also influenced European Impressionist painters with his novel composition. He can be said to be one of the oriental painters most familiar to Europeans. “Kameido Plum House Shop” is one of the masterpieces, and it is even more famous because Van Gogh copied it.
